The events of January 6th, 2021 will live in infamy as we put this period of our nation’s history behind us. The riots at the United States Capitol were nothing short of an attack on our Democracy. It is clear that we need to repair the wounds that political violence has created or more lives will be lost. This aggressive protest does not define the democratic standards that our nation’s citizens want to live by. Putting aside politics and party labels, the outgoing president holds responsibility for not quelling this protest. As a nonpartisan journal, we do not have any disdain for Americans exercising their first amendment rights, most importantly their freedom of speech. What we do not support is the violence that took place that led to lives being lost. As the editors of the Fieldston Political Journal, we want to let the Fieldston community know that although we are about to enter a new era of politics, it is important to reflect upon how this past year, especially the most recent events of January 6th, have changed the political landscape of this country and propelled even more political division. Thank you, and we hope that you enjoy reading the 2021 Inauguration Edition of the Fieldston Political Journal.
